Why Save The Trees?

Grades 6-9 SOL OBJECTIVES: LA 6.1,6.2,6.3d,6.5,6.6 MA 6.18,6.20,6.7,6.8,6.9

SCI 6.9, 6.1 a-k, 6.2d SS USII.5 a-d, USII.7, USII.8

Purpose

To understand that trees are a valuable natural resource, and without their survival, technology and life as we know it can change drastically.

Context

Until the fifth grade, most students understand that trees are a natural resource and that they supply us with everything from paper to the homes which we live. Transferring the concept on a higher level thinking realm is one of the most difficult challenges we face teaching, and the most difficult concept children face learning. If you were to do a K-W-L with students in the younger years, all trees are the same, and there is no concept of how it is pureed into mash for paper, cut into lumber to build yet alone used for energy.
By the time they get to 5th grade student interest increases and it becomes harder to find a method to
keep their interest. For kids, finding out that there are over 20,000 types of trees, pulls in their attention. For the teacher it gives plenty of room to expand and direct the curriculum and instruction to higher level thinking skills and knowledge.

This lesson introduces the history of trees, not just the type of trees. It discusses why they must be saved in order to keep benefit humans, animals and our Earth. Students will learn by about the history of plants and that they have been around on the earth longer then any other organism. This lesson will focus on the past use of our natural resource and the options we have in saving trees to continue providing some of the groundwork for the things we need to survive in the next century.

Students will be introduced to the "Tree Doctor" and learn what they can do to help save the trees. The will also be made aware of occupations that are focused in the area of forestry.

Have students preview their QUESTO sheet. This sheet will direct them to websites and activities that will help them transfer what they know, what they need to learn and how they can compile data to determine what they can do.

By using the computer lab and a main computer, show the students a tabbed version of the websites they will visit today. Leave a tile version on the screen so that navigating will be easier.

This web quest is intended to lead students to understand that our natural resources are more and more limited. That the tree has been around longer than any other organism and in our life time we may see it become extinct. Students will also be motivated to support the things we need to do to save the trees for a better future.

Development

Discussion:Where do trees get the nutrients they need to grow?

What do trees release into the atmosphere that humans need?

What do we know about tree growth and age?

Objectives

o Students will understand how humans, animals, and the earth benefit from trees

o Students will learn about the history of the oldest living thing, and their future

o Students will work through team activities and web quest online and learn how to look for specific information.

Ask students to tell you how we benefit from trees.

Have the students look through the QUESTO and ask individual teams to connect the information from what they think the articles will be about with something they have learned before.

As a class, between web pages, brainstorm things that will help keep healthier plants.
Have poster paper up to create a mapping of ideas.
Have a poster board for words and definitions students may request information about.

Students will make a terrarium and experiment with different soils/ document data.

Students will complete a final project of their choice for a graded assignment using at least three software applications WORD, PUBLISHER, DIGITAL, VIDEO EQUIPMENT, POWER POINT, INSPIRATION SOFTWARE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINES OR WINDOWS ON SCIENCE
At the end of the week a Q&A sheet on Save the Water will be passed out and will ask similar questions

Where does it come from?

How much did we have?

What do we have now, why less?

What is water used for?

What will happen without it?

What can we do to save it?

Students may use any resources to complete the sheet.

Flush Fat With These 4 Detox Drinks

!±8± Flush Fat With These 4 Detox Drinks

When people gain fat, they don't get more fat cells, but the existing fat cells get bigger. This can happen because of hormonal imbalances, lack of exercise and foods that can make your body store fat instead of flushing it.

Fat cells can store "excess energy," like excess nutrients from overeating. They can even store toxic compounds, like organochlorines, from pesticides along with other chemicals, which are not easily broken down by your body.

If you want to lose fat, or the fatty look, you must do two things. First you must shrink the fat cells. The second is to keep your lymphatic system in good working order.

Your lymphatic system is a type of circulatory system. It transports white blood cells through your body while transporting waste to organs of detoxification or elimination.

Your lymphatic system must work efficiently so that toxins leave your body, not just change locations. These are some of the beverages that can help.

Grapefruit Juice - Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice is one of the best cleanser's for your lymphatic system. Grapefruits contain high amounts of Vitamin C, which helps your body naturally detoxify.

In addition, grapefruits are high in phytonutrients called limonoids - in particular limonin. Limonin is a compound that helps promote the formation of glutathione-S-transferase, a detoxifying enzyme. This enzyme causes the liver to render toxins to be easily excreted from the body. These compounds are also work as powerful antioxidants.

Grapefruit juice can increase the activity of liver enzymes. In fact, it helps with Phase I and Phase II detoxification. This is important since some foods only help the body with Phase I detoxification. If unbalanced and left incomplete, these half-neutralized toxins can be more hazardous to your body.

Grapefruit juice will help your liver detoxify and clear harmful carcinogens from your body. Not only is this a healthy preventive measure, but when your liver is working the way it should, it is more efficient at burning fat - a job it may put on hold if it is over burdened.

Cranberry Juice - Pure cranberry juice is a natural fat flushing drink. It must be 100% pure cranberry juice without anything added. (Check the label, you might be surprised.)

Cranberry juice contains high levels of organic acids. When taken on a regular basis, these help the body dissolve fatty deposits.

Cranberry juice has been found in research to inhibit certain strains of bacteria from sticking to red blood cells or mouth cells which can cause them to linger in the body. In addition, it helps block a certain bacteria from sticking to cells causing urinary tract infections. This raises the body's ability to flush the bacteria out of the system more easily.

Green tea - Green tea is one of the most famous fat flushing drinks. Like cranberry juice, green tea is extremely high in antioxidants. It has been known to help many dieters lose belly fat more quickly when taken 2-3 times a day. In 1997, researchers found that a component of green tea, an antioxidant called EGCG, is very powerful at limiting the negative side effects of a fatty diet and even smoking.

The Lemon Flush - Make this drink with spring water, juice from ¼ lemon, 1 Table spoon of grade B maple syrup and a dash of cayenne pepper. Make the water as hot as you can drink it and add the ingredients. Sip this drink 1-6 times per day to help flush fat and other toxins from your body.

Grade B Maple Syrup is loaded with vitamins and minerals to help maintain blood sugar during a fast or diet. Lemon juice helps break up hardened material in the joints and muscles, helps clear the kidneys and dissolves toxins and congestion all throughout your body and lymphatic system. Some herbalists claim that cayenne pepper is the most powerful herb in the world. It helps your intestines move out waste, speeds up metabolism, helps build heart tissue, and has been used to treat diseases of the circulatory system.

Consuming certain beverages can help your body perform the two jobs of fat loss more efficiently. These drinks can help your body remove waste from the fat cells and keep your lymphatic system clear and ready to transport toxins out of your system. They can help turn any weight loss program into a fat flush program.

How to Make Lemon Cayenne Pepper Detox Drink

!±8± How to Make Lemon Cayenne Pepper Detox Drink

I have created 5 easy steps on how to make lemon cayenne pepper detox drink.

Step 1

Firstly, make sure you have a cup or container large enough to take the 10oz of filtered water and all the other ingredients. Pour 5oz of the filtered water into the cup or container.

Step2

Add 2 table spoons of organic lemon juice. Ideally, you will squeeze this juice from fresh organic lemons. make sure that you do not put pulp or seeds into your container.

Step3

Now you're ready to add 2 table spoons of organic grade B maple syrup

Step4

Add 1/10 Teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (The pepper is areal concern for some people, but the lemonade is surprisingly tasty. The cayenne pepper gives the lemonade a nice kick.)

Step5

All that is left to do is stir well, add the remaining filtered water and Enjoy!

Please note that this recipe is for a single serving of the lemon pepper detox drink, and you should drink 6-12 servings a day.

To make it easy for yourself, make up a big batch by multiplying the recipe by however many servings you plan on drinking, which is what I have done in the past. Just make sure you keep it refrigerated, and don't make more then one days supply because you want the lemonade to be as fresh as possible when you drink it.

If you don't like spicy drinks take two cayenne pepper capsules with each glass of lemonade instead of mixing the ground cayenne pepper into the drink. You can find cayenne pepper capsules at most health food and vitamin stores. Check out http://www.the10daydetox.com for more info on how to make the lemonade. I have a video you can watch too!

Grade A Maple Syrup is Better Than Grade B, Right?

!±8± Grade A Maple Syrup is Better Than Grade B, Right?

When it comes to maple syrup, grade A is better than grade B right? Well, no, not necessarily. While the grade assigned to a syrup does tell you something about its flavor, it doesn't really tell you whether it tastes good.

You see, the current grading system comes from a time when maple syrup production was as a substitute for sugar long ago, when sugar had to be shipped in from thousands of miles away. This made maple syrup a good local source of sugar even if it was a bit labor intensive to produce.

The grade a syrup earns is determined by how much light can pass through the syrup. Clear syrup had less of a maple flavor and therefore tasted more like pure sugar made from sugar cane. So, the highest grades were given to the lightest syrups. In short, syrup grading can only tell us how strong the maple flavor of a syrup is likely to be. NOT how good it tastes.

Maple syrup produced in different regions and even from farm to farm will vary in taste. Elevation, mix of trees species tapped, local weather conditions, and production methods ensure that no two maple syrups taste exactly the same. Much like wine, syrup from the same farm can even be different from year to year.

So what maple syrup should you choose? The real answer is you are going to have to try a few different sources and decide for yourself which you prefer. That said, there are some general guidelines based on syrup grade that might help you.

Grade A light amber has a very light, delicate maple flavor. Many people choose to use grade A light amber on ice cream or on food that won't overpower the syrup. Much like you wouldn't pair a light white wine with a big steak. Grade A medium amber, while more flavorful that light amber, still has a mild maple flavor. Medium amber, being in the middle of the spectrum, is often the default maple syrup that people buy. Many people, even in syrup country, have only ever tried grade A medium amber. As you might expect, grade A dark Amber has a deeper, more full-bodied maple flavor.

Grade B dark syrup has a deep, robust flavor, even more flavorful that grade A dark amber. Grade A dark amber and grade B are often used for cooking. Grade B is renowned by foodies around the world and is called for by a number of detox diets.

All of these are great on pancakes and waffles, which grade you use is an individual preference. So go ahead, try a few different syrups and see which you like the best for different uses.
